Pre-Workout Before Running: What to Take, When, and What to Skip

Runners have a different relationship with pre-workouts than lifters. A big stimulant spike that feels great before a squat can mean a racing heart, jitters and an upset stomach at mile three. If you are considering a pre-workout before a run, here is what actually matters.

What helps runners

  • Caffeine, in a sensible dose. Caffeine is one of the best-supported performance aids for endurance. Research commonly uses roughly 3 to 6 mg per kilogram of body weight. For a 70 kg (about 155 lb) runner, that range is about 210 to 420mg. Fight Fuel has 283mg per serving, from three sources.
  • Electrolytes. Sweat loses sodium, potassium and magnesium. Fight Fuel provides 1,100mg of electrolytes per serving, which helps with hydration on longer or hotter runs.
  • Calm, steady energy. L-theanine, 100mg per serving, is paired with the caffeine to smooth out jittery edges.

What to skip or be careful with

  • Proprietary blends. You cannot manage your caffeine or sodium intake if the label hides the doses.
  • Heavy, fast-hitting stimulant doses if you are sensitive. A faster heart rate you have to run through is not a bonus.
  • Trying something new on race day. Test any pre-workout on training runs first.
  • Relying on it for fuel. A pre-workout is not a carbohydrate source. For efforts beyond roughly 60 to 75 minutes, most runners need carbohydrates as well, from gels, chews or food.

Timing

Most people take a pre-workout 20 to 45 minutes before training. Give yourself time to digest, and avoid taking it too late in the day, since caffeine can stay in your system for hours.

A note on beta-alanine

Fight Fuel contains 2,500mg of beta-alanine per serving. It can cause a harmless tingling sensation on the skin, usually for a short time. Some runners dislike it, so try a half serving first.

Is Fight Fuel built for running?

Fight Fuel was built for long, demanding sessions, and its mix of sustained caffeine, electrolytes and 6,000mg of L-citrulline fits endurance work. It is a pre-workout, not a complete race-day fueling plan. See the running pre-workout collection for details.

FAQ

Can I take a pre-workout before running?
Many runners do. Choose a formula with disclosed doses and a caffeine amount you tolerate, and test it in training.

How long before a run should I take it?
Usually 20 to 45 minutes before.

Will it make me jittery or upset my stomach?
That depends on your sensitivity and the dose. Start with a half serving, take it with water, and do not use it on an empty, nervous stomach before a race.
